The Renewable Product Technology (RPT) Research Unit, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Peoria, IL is recruiting a Research Biologist, Biochemist, or Chemist with experience in carbohydrate chemistry. The incumbent will be responsible for developing novel biocatalytic systems to produce carbohydrate products (e.g., oligosaccharides and polysaccharides) that can be used for encapsulation, coatings, hydrocolloids, thickening agents, prebiotics, stabilizers and other useful applications. The objective of the incumbent's research is to utilize agricultural commodities to develop biocatalytic systems for the production of new or modified carbohydrates having beneficial properties in food, pharmaceutical, or industrial applications. The research involves utilizing microbial, enzymatic, and chemocatalytic reaction systems to achieve the desired composition, structure, and physical properties of microbially-produced and/or agriculturally derived carbohydrates. The overall mission of RPT is to develop technologies that employ a variety of chemical, microbial, biochemical, and genetic approaches for converting agricultural materials into new marketable, sustainable, and environmentally acceptable value-added products.

Salary Range of $79,363 to $122,683 per year.
